Program Overview
This intensive 1-week Neonatology Fellowship Program is designed to provide participants with hands-on clinical exposure and structured observational training in a high-volume tertiary neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The program focuses on evidence-based neonatal care, advanced respiratory support, neonatal emergencies, and multidisciplinary NICU practice.
Weekly Program Schedule
Day 1 – NICU Orientation & Core Neonatal Care
Introduction to NICU structure, workflow, and protocols
Infection control and patient safety in the NICU
Daily NICU rounds with faculty
Neonatal admission assessment and documentation
Thermoregulation, fluid & electrolyte management
Case discussions: common NICU admissions
Day 2 – Neonatal Respiratory Support
Neonatal respiratory physiology
Non-invasive ventilation (CPAP, NIPPV)
Mechanical ventilation strategies in neonates
Oxygen therapy and saturation targeting
Observership: ventilated neonates in NICU
Case-based discussion on respiratory distress syndrome (RDS)
Day 3 – Neonatal Emergencies & Critical Care
Neonatal resuscitation principles (NRP overview)
Management of sepsis and septic shock
Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and therapeutic hypothermia
Hemodynamic monitoring and inotropic support
Observership: emergency cases and acute interventions
Multidisciplinary case review
Day 4 – Nutrition, Growth & Special Neonatal Conditions
Neonatal nutrition: parenteral and enteral feeding
Breast milk management and fortification
Management of prematurity and growth restriction
Neonatal jaundice and metabolic disorders
Follow-up strategies for high-risk neonates
Observership: nutrition planning and follow-up rounds
Day 5 – Ethics, Family-Centered Care & Program Wrap-Up
Ethics in neonatology and end-of-life care
Family communication and counseling in NICU
Discharge planning and continuity of care
Quality improvement and NICU audit practices
Final case discussions & participant feedback
