Program Overview

This intensive 1-week Neonatology Fellowship Program is designed to provide participants with hands-on clinical exposure and structured observational training in a high-volume tertiary neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The program focuses on evidence-based neonatal care, advanced respiratory support, neonatal emergencies, and multidisciplinary NICU practice.

 

Weekly Program Schedule

Day 1 – NICU Orientation & Core Neonatal Care

  • Introduction to NICU structure, workflow, and protocols

  • Infection control and patient safety in the NICU

  • Daily NICU rounds with faculty

  • Neonatal admission assessment and documentation

  • Thermoregulation, fluid & electrolyte management

  • Case discussions: common NICU admissions

 

Day 2 – Neonatal Respiratory Support

  • Neonatal respiratory physiology

  • Non-invasive ventilation (CPAP, NIPPV)

  • Mechanical ventilation strategies in neonates

  • Oxygen therapy and saturation targeting

  • Observership: ventilated neonates in NICU

  • Case-based discussion on respiratory distress syndrome (RDS)

 

Day 3 – Neonatal Emergencies & Critical Care

  • Neonatal resuscitation principles (NRP overview)

  • Management of sepsis and septic shock

  • Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and therapeutic hypothermia

  • Hemodynamic monitoring and inotropic support

  • Observership: emergency cases and acute interventions

  • Multidisciplinary case review

 

Day 4 – Nutrition, Growth & Special Neonatal Conditions

  • Neonatal nutrition: parenteral and enteral feeding

  • Breast milk management and fortification

  • Management of prematurity and growth restriction

  • Neonatal jaundice and metabolic disorders

  • Follow-up strategies for high-risk neonates

  • Observership: nutrition planning and follow-up rounds

 

Day 5 – Ethics, Family-Centered Care & Program Wrap-Up

  • Ethics in neonatology and end-of-life care

  • Family communication and counseling in NICU

  • Discharge planning and continuity of care

  • Quality improvement and NICU audit practices

  • Final case discussions & participant feedback

  • Certificate of Completion Ceremony
